Artist Statement

Ashley Nicole Allison is a lifelong nerd and self-proclaimed fangirl who employs a multitude of stylistic elements in order to perpetually develop and inform her growth as an artist.

Part fanart, part parody, Allison’s work is a satirical hodge-podge of genres and images appropriated from contemporary life, art historical canon, cartoons and comics, internet lore, and myriad pop culture references, culminating in a complex juxtaposition of content that is contextually disjointed yet visually cohesive.

Allison alters traditionally technical decisions -- such as composition or the treatment of media and its application -- into opportunities to reinvent popular sources and themes, creating something new, surprising, or altogether outrageous.

She celebrates exploration and adaptation, thoughtfully incorporating recycled materials and imagery into her pieces to emphasize color and texture, thus creating her signature tongue-in-cheek style.

Her humorous and anarchical narratives exploit a variety of cultural and internet tropes, ranging in tone from contemporary meme-lore to high art, and are conceptually influenced by other radical appropriative artists, such as Marcel DuChamp, Roy Lichtensein, Richard Hamilton, Romero Britto, and Mike Bennett.
